Do not get excited and say I did not warn you: Phone use in the toilet is a BAD, BAD idea! This is especially true when using public toilets.

No excuses though even in your own toilet at home.

Besides, POOP TIME should not get mixed up in your multitasking schemes. There is a need to concentrate and get the job done!

A case for phone use in the toilet!

Now that we have a disclaimer in place, we can go ahead and defend this bad habit!

Below are some good reasons why you and I may find ourselves using the phone in the toilet, much as it is bad!

1. You are not alone!

It is reassuring to note you are not alone doing this hideous activity. According to Bank My Cell infographics, over 90% of teens in the US alone, carry their smartphones to the toilet.

This is not limited to the US alone. The stats reflect similar patterns around the world.

You are not the only one with a phone in the toilet

So, if everyone else is doing it, why not you? At least you are doing it in the confines of your HOME toilet.

If, however, you are doing it in PUBLIC toilets, maybe then could you be practicing a very dangerous habit. This MUST be stopped!

2. You probably poop better

Come to think of it, the smartphone in your hands allows you to remain inside the toilet a little LONGER than you would without it. After all, you worry less about missing out on updates.

Think about it. You will not worry about missing a voice call, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook update … the list is endless.

Thus, you allow POOP time to take its course until fully completed. This is actually healthy. Retaining poop, even in the smallest of quantities will increase toilet visits, or mess up gut health.

This is a harbinger of health ills such as constipation and anal fissure!

3. Bacteria is everywhere!

The truth is, bacteria are not limited to toilets only. It is everywhere. You will get exposed whether in the toilet or not.

Besides the dirty surfaces around us, we randomly interact with bacteria from our friends, who actually carry theirs to the loos. Not all smartphone users are clean enough.

Besides its presence in the washrooms, bacteria is everywhere

A bacterial exchange will happen when they touch and use our smartphones, or us using theirs.

This exchange is avoided only when we choose not to share phones – a near impossible practice.

4. Tech is addictive!

TECH has consumed society and modern lifestyle like nothing we have seen before. It is designed to change everything we do. That includes POOP time.

Steve Jobs (RIP) emphasized this fact a few decades back in praise of the revolutionary iPhone.

Every once in a while a revolutionary product comes along that changes everything.

This meant our daily routines would change dramatically and rotate around something new. In this case, TECH, and cell phones in particular.

Phone use has become just as addictive as tobacco consumption, but not necessarily in the same manner.

Unlike tobacco, whose side effects are pretty obvious, tech comes with its sets of usefulness. We use it to communicate, ease productivity, and simplify SCIENCE. And that is why society has chosen to defend it, right up to the toilet!

Tobacco addiction is probably worse compared to cell phone addiction

The few minutes we get in the toilet is part of the very few FREE minutes we have to ourselves, away from the hectic work routines.

Why not use it to please our tech desires? We can check our timeline updates, and maybe take a few SELFIES!

Other excuses for smartphone use in toilets

  • Not to miss important calls
  • To kill boredom
  • Alternative to print media
  • The only time away from work

A warning though!

When all is said and done, you have to sit back and reflect HARD on the validity of the points noted above.

Whether bacteria reign in the toilet or not, and whether it exists elsewhere outside the toilet, are important pointers.

Now that you have chosen to expose yourself blatantly, what course of action do you take to stay safe?

You need to clean your hands every now and then with WATER and SOAP. This should ALSO be done consciously every time you suspect exposure, OR when you get the feeling you are dealing with a contaminated phone.

I don’t exactly look like this emoji - in real life at least, but somehow, maybe I do. The emoji spots a visual head, eyes, mouth, and hand, just like the real me. These are tools I use to flip and write my notes about what I see in the world. In all fairness, the world is weird, interesting, and a bagful of stories to tell!
